Veranda and terrace: what’s the difference?

Telegram Persitskaya Home

Both terms are often used interchangeably. This is not entirely true. It turns out that there are fundamental differences between the verandas and terraces to the house, which is noticeable not only in the photo. This is what the set of rules “Single-apartment residential houses” tells us about. Document approved by the Ministry of Construction. And not only him.

According to official sources, this is a glazed, unheated room.

It can be of two types: attached to the building and built into it. The veranda attached to the house is placed on a separate foundation. And the built-in one is in common with the house. However, it always adjoins the main building. It is usually located at the exit from the house to the courtyard, but can also be adjacent to the main entrance to the building. The location on the roof of the lower floor is also allowed. This design has its advantages.

  • It can be used in any weather, rain, snow or strong wind will not interfere.
  • The closed form makes it easier to maintain order in the room, dirt from the street does not get inside.
  • In summer, it is easier to hide from annoying insects here.
  • You can organize storage.
  • Will become additional protection for the house from drafts and cold.

Among the shortcomings, several main ones can be distinguished.

  • It is more expensive to build such a structure than an open one. It’s a matter of glazing.
  • The building will «eat up» the sunlight and not let it into the rooms to which it adjoins. The same applies to the view from the windows of the house. To admire the beauty of nature, you have to go to the annex.

Let’s get back to official documents. They say: this is a fenced, but open, that is, not a glazed area.

It can also be of two types: attached to the building and built into it. Construction — with and without a roof (a roof is an optional element).

An extension can be placed at the entrance, encircle the whole house or part of it, be placed on the roof of the floor below. Also now free-standing open floorings are called terraces.

  • Allows you to really relax in nature. That is, you are actually on the street.
  • Does not obscure the interior of the house, does not block the path of sunlight.
  • Here you can place a barbecue, barbecue, oven or tandoor.

  • But it is comfortable to be in such an extension only in good weather.
  • Dirt and dust from the street complicates the maintenance of cleanliness.
  • Neighborhood with mosquitoes and midges.

In this way, the main thing that distinguishes a veranda from a terrace is the presence of glazing, that is, a completely closed circuit.

What to build from?

The same materials are used to create both buildings.

It is more often chosen if the main house is wooden. It is convenient and comfortable to work with wood. Almost everyone can build a small platform from timber and boards with their own hands. It is enough to have at least minimal experience with the tool. And wooden structures are subsequently quite easy to repair.

Wood is perhaps the most environmentally friendly material. And, of course, it always creates a special atmosphere, the mood of country life. The weak side of wood is its instability to moisture and fire. Therefore, all lumber must be treated with special impregnations.

stone and brick

It is logical to use these materials for the construction of extensions to stone houses.

Unlike wood, stone is not afraid of moisture and is more fire resistant. A building made of stone or brick will have good sound insulation. Another plus is long service life, strength and reliability. But for such a design, most likely, a thick, monolithic foundation will be required. And this will significantly increase the price of the entire structure. In addition, it will be quite difficult to build a structure of stone or brick yourself without experience.

A frame is usually made from it, into which glazing is then mounted.

For this design, a concrete foundation is also poured. And to assemble the frame, you need to be able to handle the welding machine. So this is not an easy task. It is also important not to forget to treat the metal with an anti-corrosion compound. As a reward for the work — a reliable closed veranda attached to the house (photo below).

Glass or «soft windows»

Glass is usually used to protect the premises from precipitation and wind. Proven, reliable, environmentally friendly solution. But this option is not cheap. Yes, and you can install glass not everywhere.

In recent years, an alternative has appeared — the so-called «soft windows». This is a transparent PVC film.

It can be mounted on wooden, brick, and metal structures. The film can be removed at any time. Another plus is that it won’t break. However, some owners of private houses complain that sometimes the canvas does not adhere tightly to the walls, as a result, snow and rain get inside. But it’s more of a quality issue.

How to use the veranda

Lunches, breakfasts and dinners in nature are not at all the same as in the kitchen. All business and worries remained there, in the house. And here you can just relax. Apparently, therefore, a dining group is often placed in the annex.

Summer living room

Soft sofas, cozy armchairs, sometimes even a fireplace or a stove — the closed gallery is also used as a summer version of the room for receiving guests and relaxing for the whole family. Here you can temporarily place a small library.

Sometimes a summer kitchen is taken out into the annex. Usually in mini format. There are also more unexpected solutions. For example, place a massive barbecue area. In these cases, as a rule, there is a dining group nearby.

Winter Garden

A glazed veranda is a suitable place to arrange a small greenhouse or a winter garden. Not all plants tolerate frosts and other weather surprises well. In a closed, but not too stuffy, spacious and bright room, they will be comfortable. True, you will have to figure out how to keep the positive temperature inside in severe frosts.

How to use the terrace

Rest space

It can be a small sofa with chairs, a swing or just pillows scattered on the floor.

Coffee break

Outdoor areas rarely host dining groups. But this is a good place for morning coffee or evening tea.

If the building is without a canopy, it is quite suitable for sunbathing. Rooftop terraces are often used in this way.

container garden

A mobile or container garden is an idea for those who do not like monotony. It is also one of the trends in landscape design. In pots and pots, floor and hanging — for a container garden, plants are planted in different containers. And then they make compositions. At the same time, you can move flowers, change their places, make new tandems at least every day. And the terrace will be a good platform for creativity.

Features of the design of the terrace and veranda in the country and in a private house

Tables, chairs, armchairs and sofas, chests of drawers and bedside tables can be more informal than for the home, have an unusual design, interesting shapes. Wooden or wicker products are always relevant. Pieces of furniture often become the dominant space, set the general mood. For example, put a cozy rocking chair or hang a light swing made of thin bars or woven cotton cord — the mood will immediately change. Or imagine: a carved sideboard, a solid wooden chest of drawers, a heavy dining table and chairs with high backs — you get a room in the style of a Russian noble estate, a completely different atmosphere.

Furniture should be not only beautiful, but also resistant to bad weather, temperature extremes. This is especially true for items that will stand in the open. Products made of artificial rattan, plastic are suitable here. Or from a tree, but specially processed.

Without it, any interior will look inanimate, empty and faceless.

Curtains, pillows, tablecloths and napkins, blankets and carpets — all this creates a unique character of the space, allows you to place accents and combine disparate objects into a single picture. And it is textiles that create a feeling of warmth. When creating the interior of a veranda in a private house (as in the photo below), you can be bolder than with the main interior space. Experiments with color and textures are quite allowed here. You can add bright colors. Against the backdrop of a blooming garden, it will not look pretentious or clumsy.

At home, we, as a rule, do not neglect various trifles.

Vases, photo frames, figurines, posters or paintings, watches, boxes — all this can be used to design a veranda and terrace in a private house, as in the photo below. Such details fill the space, they want to be considered, studied. On the terrace, the choice will be narrower. Preference should be given to items that are resistant to rain and wind, not fragile and easy to clean.

Lighting is a special issue. Here, one chandelier under the ceiling is not enough.

It is a good idea to consider several scenarios: bright general light and more intimate options. For example, table lamps, floor lamps, sconces, candles. Garlands of light bulbs will look very expressive: they can be put under the roof and along the visor of the building, decorate vertical racks and railings.

There are no strict requirements for the appearance of devices. Simple, concise options are also acceptable here. And original designs.

Climbing plants can be not only decoration, but, with the right density, they can also replace the roof or one of the walls.

Flowers in pots and planters can be placed on the steps, at the entrance and inside the site, placed in special hangers or attached to the fence.
