Provence is considered one of the varieties of rustic style — along with American country, chalet, rustic, Russian estate. His homeland is the French region of Provence (in translation, this word means “province”), known for its lavender fields, the photos of which everyone has definitely seen. Among all the country trends, the provincial French style is the most gentle, cozy and colorful in its own way, with references to Mediterranean interiors.

Most often, a Provence-style kitchen is decorated in a house, although this direction is also suitable for city apartments — especially in a stylized form. But any version of country music looks best when surrounded by wildlife and appropriate architecture.

To imagine an interior in the Provencal style, it is enough to recall romantic postcards with images of the French province or your own travel experience. The aroma of spicy herbs and fresh pastries, the salty breeze from the sea, the rough surface of the wooden floor, cute knick-knacks — all these associations are the best fit for traditional cuisine.

We highlight the main characteristic features of Provence.

  • Calm palette. The basis of the color scheme is white, brown, beige. They are complemented by pastel colors: muted green, lilac, blue, diluted yellow, etc.
  • Lots of light. The kitchen area, even if it is small in size, should not be dark. This direction is characterized by an abundance of decor and small details. For this to play, they must be clearly visible, otherwise the space will look unaesthetic and cluttered. If there is little natural light, this is compensated by thoughtful artificial lighting.
  • natural materials. First of all — a tree in any of its manifestations. As well as stone, glass, straw, natural fabrics, leather, clay. Cheap plastic in the French style is definitely not the place.
  • Vintage elements. Retro motives go hand in hand with provincial country. It can be decor, antique furniture, flea market items, heirloom crockery. Moreover, the most thorough restoration is not required — scuffs, peeling paint, faded areas just add color to the interior.
  • Combination of brutal and gentle. Rough materials and raw surfaces organically coexist with cute pastoral ornaments (checkered, flowers and greenery, small stripes) and light colors.
  • natural textures. The kitchen should not have active gloss, too bright chrome shine, cheap PVC film, glare plastic. Instead, noble matte textures are used.

The color scheme reflects the geography of this direction: hot Mediterranean coast, blue sky, sun, flower fields. The basis is necessarily natural light shades, primarily white and beige. They are used for decoration, complementing with brown tones of wood and gray stone. The result is a calm and cozy universal base.

Bright blotches are allowed in the palette (but always light ones too). Even a large set may not be white, but colored, especially if the space is decorated at the junction of Provence and romantic shabby chic or English country. Suitable for accents or as a second color:

  • Sky, cornflower blue and any other shades of blue.
  • Pistachio, grassy, mint, lime.
  • Lavender, lilac.
  • Caramel, ocher, terracotta.

An important point is the color temperature of the entire palette. Warm tones «warm» the room, while cold tones, on the contrary, «cool». At the same time, the cooking zone itself is quite hot. Choose colors to create the desired effect. For example, if you often cook, and the windows face south, it is better to use more cool shades: white, light gray, blue, lilac. If you want to make the kitchen more warm and cozy, the palette should be dominated by variations of beige, brown, terracotta, light olive, apricot, etc.

Finishing in the cooking area should be practical, so when choosing materials, consider the features of the room. First of all, it is high humidity and pollution.

In the French interiors themselves, the walls are trimmed with stone and wood: mostly they are simply plastered, sometimes they are additionally painted if you need to adjust the color. Therefore, the most popular choice for the cooking area is waterproof paint or decorative plaster. For an apron, use the same finish or decorate it with tiles. You can use wallpaper — but only those that are suitable for technical specifications:

  • Non-woven.
  • Vinyl.
  • Fiberglass.

Choose models for painting to create the effect of a typical finish for this direction — classic wallpapers are unusual for it.

The floor can be wood or stone, tiles or porcelain stoneware are also suitable. The coating should not look too perfect and smooth. Naturalness, a certain texture, a sense of home with history are welcome (even if your Provence-style kitchen is in a small apartment).

The ceiling should create a feeling of country life, so most often a light canvas is complemented by beams or trimmed with painted wood.

Furniture and appliances

The cooking zone and the dining group are the two focal points of the room. If it also plays the role of a living room, a seating area is added to them.

The central place in any kitchen is occupied by a set. Its configuration depends on the shape and size of the room. Most often it is two-row, but some of the upper cabinets can be replaced with open shelves, on which dishes and decor will be beautifully arranged. Facades should not be minimalist — in this direction, on the contrary, panels, figured carvings, overhead elements, perforation, and other furniture decor are welcome. The best material is wood, but high-quality MDF can be used. If space permits, storage in the headset is complemented by a beautiful vintage sideboard (it can also be placed in the living room area) or a shelving unit.

The dining group is represented by a traditional wooden table with chairs. If the room is small, a large rectangular or oval model can be replaced with a small table, like in a cafe. As for the headset, decorative elements are characteristic of dining furniture. If you stick to country in its purest form, the chairs and table can be rough, rustic simple. If Provence is mixed with classic or neoclassic, choose more elegant models with thin legs, curved backs, etc.

Modern technology is strongly knocked out of the aesthetics of this style, so you need to either hide it or select retro-styled models. The latter, as a rule, is more complicated and more expensive, so most often they simply choose built-in appliances. The refrigerator and oven can be additionally hidden behind blank facades. Choose small appliances (kettle, toaster, coffee maker) in the appropriate design — now the market has a large selection of designs and colors.

In French country, decor and textiles play a key role: there are many decorations, they are selected with love, filling the space with character and history.

The decor should be varied, it is not necessary to strive for a complete stylistic identity, like all accessories from one collection. Each item must be unique, any handwork is welcome — even if the result is not perfect. Vintage and grandmother’s heritage will also perfectly complement the interior.

So, use to decorate the kitchen area:

  • Bouquets of fresh flowers in beautiful vases.
  • Pictures and posters with thematic plots. Landscapes and still lifes look especially good.

  • Dinnerware and decorative utensils.
  • Planks, wooden letters.
  • Wicker baskets and lace.
  • Wooden or clay pots for indoor plants.

Examples of decor in the Provence style kitchen are in the photo gallery below.

Much attention is paid to textiles. For windows, light curtains or Roman blinds made of loose fabric (cotton, viscose, linen) are suitable. They can be plain or with a typical pattern: floral, checkered or striped. Kitchen towels, napkins and a tablecloth are good to use as bright accents — but if desired, they can also be matched in a light solid color palette. Textiles with lace inserts and embroidery on a rustic theme look organic.
