But even in fairly spacious apartments there are narrow and small rooms that need to be somehow brought back to normal and used functionally. We asked designers what they like to use. one Kitchen cabinets and monochrome finishes for zoning the kitchen-living room
“Often it is required to make a kitchen-living room from a medium-sized kitchen. This means that you need to fit a kitchen set, a dining table, a sofa and a comfortable TV area. In this case, it is important to visually separate the kitchen from the living room, to make two zones instead of one. But at the same time, the kitchen should be in harmony with the living room and look like a single space. For this we use high top kitchen cabinets, monochrome finishes. The kitchen will look better if it is placed at a corner and completed with either a kitchen column, for example, with a refrigerator, or a small bar counter. If you place the sofa on the same wall as the kitchen, and the TV is opposite, then everything together — the kitchen set and the sofa — will be a single composition. As a rule, we highlight the wall behind the sofa with some color, an accent mirror or other material,” Oksana shares.

3 Different colors
Refuse objects that clutter up the space and visually divide the room with the help of color. Oksana Agaponova recommends this technique for a children’s room.
In the nursery, most often there is a problem of separating the sleeping area from the play or study area. I like it when one zone is separated from another not only by furniture or partitions, but also by different design. It can be a different wall covering, a different color and even a different ceiling.

“Pros: the kitchen is positioned as a separate space, in a niche you can use other finishing materials, not the same as in other areas of this room, make a different ceiling height. Thus, the border between the kitchen and the dining room looks reasonable and logical,” says Anna.
5 Light partitions
Increasingly, developers offer studios from 19 to 25 square meters. m. And this is really a task for the designer. Entrance hall, bathroom, kitchen and bed — all this should be placed in a small area. In addition, remote work has made its own adjustments, and more and more often they are asked to place a work area. Our favorite zoning technique is light partitions. It can be shelves, slats, glass, but not a main wall. Air and volume must be preserved. That is why we always try to make a single floor covering in a small space, and the zones are separated by a translucent structure. As, for example, in a studio of 25 sq. m for a young man. A bright accent partition made of metal and glass successfully separates the kitchen area, workplace and living room.
6 Finish combination
“Floor coverings, such as porcelain stoneware and parquet, can serve as a conditional boundary between zones. In small rooms, the ceiling is best painted with white paint to visually increase the space. At the same time, part of it can be painted in a different color to create the necessary atmosphere. Additionally, the space can be divided by an accent wall. Thus, the walls can differ not only in color, but also in relief, textures and other materials,” says Olga.
7 Podium
One of the forms of zoning that Oksana Agaponova recommends for a nursery is zoning with forms, which also includes a podium, as in the designer’s project. “Furniture, slats or podiums can be used as space dividers, the main thing is not to overdo it and not make them interfere with movement,” says Oksana.
eight enfilade layout
Designer Anna Tarasova used this technique to functionally divide the corridor.
In one project, we encountered a very long and narrow corridor. I had to divide it into 4 parts with the help of small partitions. As a result, they made an enfilade zoning scheme. It turned out to be small but comfortable areas: an entrance hall, a dressing room, a library, a hall. Since the corridor was quite narrow, built-in wardrobes 42 centimeters deep were installed and mirrors were added. A niche was created in the library area with the help of open shelving, and a pouffe was placed in the niche. The corridor ceased to be monotonous, and the room was radically transformed.
9 Cabinet furniture
Using cabinets and shelving to divide space is a popular technique. But in our survey, designers remember it not as a direct divider — to put a closet in the middle of the room. Act more delicately, following the example of Olga Vodeneyeva.
“With the help of cabinet furniture, you can divide the space. For example, organize a kitchen built into a separate box or use multifunctional storage systems: a wardrobe with doors on one side and open shelves for storing books and decor on the other,” says Olga.
ten glass blocks
Glass blocks are a retro touch, but they are experiencing a new round of popularity in modern interiors. Natalya Solntseva loves to use it.
When the customer categorically does not want to combine the kitchen and living room into one, a good solution for space zoning is the use of glass blocks built into the walls. At the same time, the interior of any small room, in our case, the kitchen, will not visually look closed. This approach has several advantages. Firstly, the frosted or transparent glass blocks themselves with various volumetric textures decorate the interior, add zest. Secondly, they simply attract attention, becoming an excellent accent, which in our case perfectly zones the dining area in the kitchen. Thirdly, any small room with such a wall solution will always look visually larger.

Simple and functional: provide different light sources for different zones in the same room.
“You can design different lighting scenarios: a sconce at the head of the bed, a table lamp on the desktop, a floor lamp in the seating area by the sofa or armchair, and pendants above the dining table. Such a technique helps to make the interior not only more comfortable, but also to divide it into different zones,” notes Olga Vodeneeva.
12 Textile and decor
The use of curtains as a separator has long been known, and Olga also recalls this technique. But it also suggests using other decor.
Carpets, mirrors, live potted plants, framed paintings and magazine covers help define the space and work as decorative accents. At the same time, they are a spectacular technique for completing work on the interior.
