How to decorate the interior of the corridor: useful tips and 100 beautiful photos

Decorating the interior design of the corridor is not so simple. It is necessary to solve several problems at once: adjust the proportions of the elongated room, think over the lighting, find a place to store everything you need. Because of this, the passage area often remains featureless, exclusively utilitarian. We tell you how to avoid this, as well as share useful tips and inspiring photos of real interiors.

  • In the apartment, the corridor performs different functions. It can be both a hallway and an ordinary passage between rooms. In the first case, you need to organize an entrance group, store shoes and outerwear, pick up moisture-resistant finishing materials. In the second, as a rule, it is enough to make the interior harmonious and visually pleasing.
  • In typical apartments, the transition between rooms is almost always small and dark. There are no windows here, there are not enough square meters to arrange large furniture. If the architecture of the apartment is complex, the hallway may look like a broken line with several turns and awkward right angles that need to be used somehow.
  • The longer the room, the more dreary this tunnel looks. Therefore, the main task is to change the real proportions, add air and light, visually push the walls apart.

Understanding these features, it will be easier to plan the interior of the corridor in the apartment.

Colors in the interior of the corridor

Despite the typical features of this room (no natural light, small area, disproportionate), it is quite possible to experiment with the palette.

Rely on the overall style and your preferences, but remember the key principles.

  • Light colors visually enlarge the space. White, gray, beige, blue, mint will be an excellent base for a small room. They can be diluted with a couple of bright accents.
  • In a monochrome palette, there must be several textures so that the interior does not look flat. Also use different shades of the same color.
  • You can also use dark colors. If there is a well-lit room at the end of the hall, there will be an interesting effect when a person walks into the light. Doors with glass inserts will enhance the contrast, through which even more sun will penetrate.
  • If you want to use multiple colors, follow the 60/30/10 rule. 60% of the palette is better to give under a more neutral shade. 30% — additional color, 10% — the brightest, usually a decor or an accent piece of furniture.
  • Regardless of whether the hall will be in light or dark colors, use natural, eye-pleasing shades and combine them by temperature: warm with warm, cold with cold. Achromats — white, gray, black — look equally good with any colors.

If in living rooms the decoration performs primarily a decorative function, then in passage rooms, the characteristics of materials are extremely important.

The main requirement for flooring is wear resistance, since people constantly walk along the corridor, which means that the floor is subjected to regular loads. Let’s add mechanical influences here: the edges of the soles, heels, animal claws. If the room serves as a hallway, then this is also an area with increased pollution. Therefore, the coating should be easy to maintain and moisture resistant.

The best way to meet these requirements porcelain stoneware — it withstands any mechanical stress, is not afraid of water and household chemicals, and lasts for decades. In second place — ceramic tilesa. It is slightly less durable than porcelain stoneware, but in general it is comparable to it in terms of characteristics and is suitable for any entrance area.

Of the new materials deserves attention quartz vinyl. This coating is made from quartz sand, polymers and binders — the result is a strong and durable material. Another plus is that quartz vinyl perfectly imitates natural textures: stone, wood, marble.

Laminate or carpet can be used, but is best in the living area rather than in the hallway at the door. If the entrance group smoothly flows into the passage between the rooms, put two different coatings: for example, porcelain stoneware or tiles closer to the door, laminate in the rest.

Walls should be non-marking and easy to maintain.

The best finishing materials:

  • washable paint — You can choose any shade and finish (matte, glossy, semi-gloss). If there are animals or active children at home who like to run around the apartment and check surfaces for strength, pay attention to anti-vandal paint. She not only is not afraid of mechanical influences, but also perfectly washes.
  • Decorative plaster — a good option if you want to make walls calm, but so that they do not look too boring. On relief plaster with fine grooves, dirt and scratches are less visible.
  • Washable wallpaper. Non-woven, vinyl, fiberglass are best suited. Textiles can be glued in the interior corridor, where there are no differences in temperature and humidity. However, remember that an expensive fabric coating requires careful maintenance, although it looks visually stunning. Ideas for the interior of the corridor with wallpaper — in the gallery below.

The color of the finish and the presence of an ornament depend on which way you want to go. The safest — light walls, plain or with a small, barely noticeable pattern. The second option is to use contrasting colors and an active print to correct the proportions of a too narrow corridor. In this case, use horizontal and vertical stripes, simple geometry, and optical illusions (such as colorful diamonds).

Everything is simple with the ceiling: smooth, light, matte or semi-gloss.

Refuse complex multi-level structures, cornices and massive decor. Gloss reflects light and adds air, but it should not be too much: it will glare, colors will be distorted, and eyes will get tired.

If the room is cramped and the ceilings are low, they need to be visually raised. To do this, you can take the same light shade as on the walls — the borders will be erased. The built-in lighting around the perimeter also works well, the effect of a soaring ceiling is obtained.

Usually there is not much furniture in the hallway.

The main storage, as a rule, is taken out to the entrance group or dressing room. In a narrow room, where the doors also open, a wardrobe or chest of drawers simply will not fit. If the footage allows, in this area you can place:

  • A narrow console, preferably hanging or on thin legs.
  • Pouffe or banquette.
  • Compact shoe.
  • Open hanger.

Furniture should not be massive. The more elegant the silhouettes and the more air around it, the more spacious the room will seem. For local storage, use small systems: whatnots, baskets, hanging shelves and hooks.

A competent lighting system will transform even the most cramped and dark passage.

  • If the room is long, use several powerful lights to ensure that each section of the hall is evenly lit.
  • Instead of individual lamps, you can make LED lighting by running it around the entire perimeter of the hall or along the center line of the ceiling.
  • Additionally illuminate the mirrors so that it is convenient to look in them. The lamps in this zone should be bright enough, without being skewed into too warm or too cold light.
  • If there are posters or paintings on the walls, place sconces between them or illuminate the frames with small LEDs.

In the passage room, decor is needed not only for aesthetics. It helps to place accents and focus attention where needed.

  • In a narrow space, mirrors are indispensable. It can be either wall or desktop models, or whole panels from floor to ceiling — on furniture facades or directly on the wall.
  • Pictures and posters will make the interior more atmospheric. Passing along a long corridor, they can be admired, as in a gallery. This is a cool design idea for a hallway interior.

  • Small curly ceiling lamps or wall sconces will not only make up for the lack of natural light, but also place focal points in space. The eye will move between them, and not wander over a monochromatic finish.
  • Don’t forget architectural decor. Stucco, moldings, platbands on interior doors will not take up much space and will make the space embossed, and the interior — noble. By the way, such decorations are suitable not only for the classics. The combination of traditional stucco and modern trends (loft, minimalism, contemporary, Scandinavian style) looks very interesting.
